Local. Organic. Sustainable. Fair Trade. CSA. GMO. HFCS. What do these mean and how are they relevant to your life? To your health? To the planet? To all living things? Please join us for a six-week discussion course published by the Northwest Earth Institute entitled βMenu for the Future.β This course will address food from multiple perspectives: cultural, economic, ecological, health and social β each presenting a different, though often complementary, angle on the complex modern food systems most of us depend on. Each week you will have assigned readings and then we will meet to discuss and ask questions. The rule is that we do not judge or criticize anotherβs viewpoint nor is consensus a requirement. The point is to have an intelligent discourse, to learn from one another and perhaps learn more about ourselves in the process.
We will meet on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. for a brown bag lunch and social time (this is optional) with the discussion to begin promptly at Noon. We will meet in small groups of 8-10 people for about one hour. Occasionally we might bring in a guest speaker for those that wish to stay longer and focus on one or more aspects of that particular weeksβ reading. The course will end on February 12th with our last chapter and a celebration time for us all. At this time we will reflect on the course and consider what changes, if any, we might put into practice in our own lives.
Please register not later than January 4, 2012 by emailing Erin at fiuccsec@centurytel.net or call her at 253-549-2420. The cost for materials is $20. (payable to NWEI.) If you would like to request financial assistance for the course please let Erin know. Upon your registration Erin will provide you with information how to pay for and receive your materials. (Please note: You will need to read Chapter one and be ready to discuss at the Januray 8th meeting, so please register ASAP!)
