GIG HARBOR, WA β€” According to the latest data from the Washington Secretary of State's Office, as of Monday evening just about 50 of Pierce County's 178,621 ballots have not yet been counted.

That's about 0.027 percent of the vote unaccounted for, and as a result we've now got a pretty thorough look at how the county's local elections have panned out. In total, there are 555,301 registered voters, meaning that the turnout for the 2021 General Election was just 32.17 percent. That's a little less than local election officials had hoped for: early predictions from the Pierce County Auditor's Office estimated the turnout would be closer to 39 percent. That also means Pierce County had one of the weakest turnouts in all of Washington, only Yakima, Whitman, Stevens, Grays Harbor, Franklin, Clark, and Adams counties had lower turnouts.

That's a little surprising considering the number of important races Pierce County residents had an opportunity to vote in: the November election will decide the next mayors of Tacoma, Buckley, Bonney Lake, and Eatonville, who will fill two Port of Tacoma Commissioner positions, and nearly two dozen city council positions, including in Lakewood, Gig Harbor and Puyallup.

Though just 0.027 percent of ballots remain uncounted, these results are not set in stone yet. The Pierce County Auditor has already wrapped its random audit of election ballots, but will not certify the vote until Nov. 23. Afterwards it will be double-checked by the state, who will certify the election again - and for the final time - on Dec. 2.
