Northbound Burnham Closed Temporarily Due to Fuel Leak

Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One responded to an oil leak from two 55-gallon drums on Burnham Drive NW.

As of 4:05 p.m.,Β Washington State Department of EcologyΒ is on the scene and working to develop a cleanup plan. Road closure will extend for at least another hour.

Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One responded to an unknown fuel spill in the 9400 block of Burnham Drive NW near Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH on Thursday afternoon. Β 

Upon arrival, crews found two 55-gallon drums that were leaking substance that appeared to be heating fuel, according to Eric Waters, spokesman for Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One. Β Β  Β 

Firefighters were able to stop the leak and contain the fluid, which was identified as home heating oil. Β  Β Β 

Waters said quick actions by firefighters prevented the leaking fuel from entering the storm drain, which goes to Donkey Creek.

Waters said northbound Burnham Drive NW is currently closed as fuel leaked onto the roadway.

Crews are currently awaiting the arrival of the Washington State Department of Ecology and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Β

The leak has been stopped and contained. The fire department said heating fuel oil was the material that was leaking.

The single lane closure will be effective for at least anΒ hour. Avoid the road if you can.
