Will Gig Harbor's Peddlers License Requirement Reduce Door-To-Door Sales?

The City of Gig Harbor has a new licensing requirement for solicitors and peddlers who want to do business in the city.

Now, anyone selling goods door-to-door or any other pedaling must be licensed. The books require the license specifically for "persons who go from place to place or house to house, offering for sale goods, merchandise, or services of any type, or are seeking to obtain gifts, donations, or contributions of money, clothing, or other valuable things.  Peddling or soliciting does not include place to place religious or political activity, promotion, or distribution of such materials."

What's more? The person selling or soliciting is required to wear a photo badge issued by the city after an approval process that includes a background check.

And licensed peddlers and solicitors - who must pay $50 for a license that is valid 90 days from issuance - are allowed to sell only between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Residents who don't want peddlers or solicitors can post "No Peddlers" or "No Solicitors" or "No Trespassing" signs on their property.
