Road Work Affects Drivers On and Near Joint Base Lewis-McChord Starting Today

Road construction begins today on Joint Base Lewis-McChord that will affect traffic on and near the base the next two months.

First, a major traffic revision begins today on Perimeter Road, between Lewis Main and McChord Field, the base says. The work will last through May 31 for road repair. Installation access at several JBLM gates will be affected:

During the construction, JBLM gates will not be accessible from I-5 via Perimeter Road, and through-traffic on Perimeter Road. will be blocked. On McChord Field, the Barnes & Logistics Gates will close during the 8-week project.

• POV traffic to McChord Field will be re-directed to the McChord East Gate, located at the intersection of Military Road and Perimeter Rd. The gate will operate 5:30 a.m.-7 p.m. daily (Seven days/week). PLEASE NOTE: These hours apply to the McChord East Gate only. The Lewis Main East Gate remains open 24/7, it is not affected by this construction.
• Commercial traffic will detour to North Gate, located at the intersection of S. Tacoma Way and 112th St. The gate will open extended hours to accommodate commercial access, 6 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday (after hours, commercial vehicle traffic to McChord Field should use the McChord Main Gate).
• North Gate inbound will close to POV traffic, due to the commercial traffic detour. POV drivers (primarily morning commuters) who previously entered at North Gate will be re-directed to the McChord Field Main Gate, beginning April 1.

On JBLM Lewis Main, the Rainier Gate will operate limited hours, for single-direction traffic only, during the morning & afternoon commute.

• Morning: Inbound traffic only. 5 p.m.- 7:30 a.m.; Monday through Friday.
• Afternoon: Outbound traffic only, 4 p.m.-7 p.m.; Monday through Friday.

All traffic will be directed to/from Military Rd. S via Perimeter Rd., I-5 access will not be available during the construction.

Closed weekends & federal holidays.

Signs indicating closures and detours will be in place to alert drivers.

Pendleton Avenue

Drivers will have to find another way to get around the paving that's taking place at Pendleton Avenue beginning Tuesday.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, workers will close off the Tacoma Avenue detour, and drivers will have to use the Colorado Avenue detour between 41st Division Drive and Jackson Avenue.
