LAKEWOOD, WA — The downtown Lakewood library is now 59 years old, and city managers say it's starting to show its age. But to revitalize or replace the aging building, as well as the nearby Tillicum branch, the city needs a little guidance from the community first.

The Pierce County Library System and the City of Lakewood are teaming up to create a new library planning committee, which will be staffed by volunteers, to help decide what will become of the older buildings. Lakewood residents are invited to apply to join the committee by Saturday, April 30.

According to the city, both buildings are in need of extensive repairs. The main branch on Wildaire Rd SW needs its roof, elevator, HVAC system and plumbing looked at. All combined, the repairs could cost up to $15 million.

“At this point, costs to repair and maintain the buildings far outweigh the value of the properties," said Pierce County Library Executive Director Georgia Lomax. "We are committed to providing quality library services for Lakewood residents.”

The Tillicum branch, meanwhile, work to repair aging windows, doors, and a damaged roof. The city estimates the roof repair alone would cost over $2.4 million.
