Extreme Christmas Tree Lights Up Puyallup

The Extreme Christmas Tree, a holiday tradition that started last year in Puyallup is making a comeback tonight, Nov. 26. The 185-foot artificial Christmas tree utilizes the framework of the Extreme Scream thrill ride at the Puyallup Fair & Events Center, and is the tallest structure in the Puyallup Valley.

The Extreme Christmas Tree surprised and delighted locals and visitors alike last holiday season. It immediately became a favorite, with the request to make it an annual tradition.

Enhancements have been made to the original tree, doubling the number of lights from last year. There will be 4,800 lights, half white and half green LED lights. The Extreme Christmas Tree statistics are as follows:

• 185 feet high (or 18 stories high)
• 2,400 white LED lights
• 2,400 green LED lights
• 12 cables of lights, placed in a wide circular base meeting at the top
• 4,800+ feet of cable (nearly one mile)
• Blinking red light at top doubles as aircraft warning beacon and tree topper
• Four American flags also top the tree
• Will stay lit throughout holiday season

The world's highest artificial Christmas tree measured 52 m (170.6 ft), and was covered in green PVC artificial foliage. The 'Peace Tree' was designed by Grupo Sonae Distribuição Brasil and displayed in Moinhos de Vento Park, Porto Alegre, Brazil from Dec. 2001 until Jan. 2002. The Rockefeller Center tree in 2012 measures only 80’, hardly competition to the 185’ tall Extreme Christmas Tree!

LED (light-emitting diode) lights were selected as they are 90% more efficient than incandescent bulbs.
