Lawsuit Aims To Stop Milton Megachurch: Report

A community group, Citizens for a Small Town Milton, has filed a suit hoping to halt the 20-acre Salvation Slavic Baptist Church.

MILTON, WA β€” The battle over a proposed megachurch in Milton rages on, with the filing of a new lawsuit in Pierce County Superior Court aiming to put a halt to its construction.

As The News Tribune first reported, a community group, Citizens for a Small Town Milton, filed the suit earlier this month. The suit claims the construction of the 20-acre, 2,000-seat Salvation Slavic Baptist Church will "destroy the small town character " of Milton, the Tribune reported.

A GoFundMe for Citizens for a Small Town Milton explains that the group is not opposed to the church on religious grounds, but that they are concerned about the scope and size of the church, which they argue would "would fundamentally change Milton’s character forever."

"No matter the outcome, we wish the congregation the best and congratulate them on building their fellowship," writes fundraiser organizer Amy Jo Hendershot. "We only hope that their future church is built on a major road and not in a quiet neighborhood."

The suit is a last-ditch to block the church from moving from its current location in Edgewood into the new plot in Milton, according to the Tribune, as a hearing examiner for the city already ruled the proposed church did not break city code restrictions.
