Puyallup's Utility Moratorium Will Remain In Effect

The state's utility moratorium is ending, but the City of Puyallup is buying its residents extra time to get their payments in order.

PUYALLUP, WA β€” Washington state's utility moratorium expires Sept. 30, but the City of Puyallup wants residents to know that the local utility moratorium will remain in place for the foreseeable future.

Earlier this summer, the governor intentionally brought the utility and eviction moratorium expirations into alignment, saying the two were "inextricably linked". However, when the state announced its final eviction moratorium extension last week, it did not prolong the utility moratorium with it. That means that while many don't need to pay rent, starting next month most Washingtonians will need to pay their power, internet and water bills β€” or risk having those services cut off.

That's not true for Puyallup residents, though, as the local utility moratorium will remain in effect until further notice. The city says that its moratorium is directly tied to Washington’s State of Emergency proclamation for the COVID-19 pandemic, and that it will only lift the moratorium 60 days after state leaders lift the State of Emergency Order, which they have yet to do.
