Gardening Class: Drought Recovery & Developing a Resilient Landscape

Get a jump start on spring gardening. On Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m., join this free virtual gardening class hosted by the city’s Water Utility Division. You'll learn fall gardening practices that will help minimize gardening labor in the spring and help your garden recover from heat stress next summer.

Email Lauren Imhoff to register. Each participant will be sent the Zoom meeting ID and password before the class.

New Ballot Drop Box in Renton

King County Elections has installed a new ballot drop box in Renton. The drop box is located across the street from the Elections office at 725 Powell Ave. SW. The drive-up box is open 24 hours a day and is available now through Election Day on Nov. 3. Boxes are emptied daily by Elections staff.

Ballots were mailed last week. King County Elections recommends calling 206-296-8683 if you have not yet received your ballot. For more information on the General Election, visit our website or King County Elections.

Bloodworks NW Pop-Ups in Renton

Bloodworks Northwest has two pop-up blood drives coming up on Oct. 22 and 23 at Lindbergh and Renton High Schools. Donations take one hour and are conducted following social distancing guidelines. Masks are required for all donors and staff. No guests or people under age 16 permitted onsite. Registration is required.

Community Conversations with Renton Chamber

Join the Renton Chamber of Commerce for their new series, “CommUNITY Conversations: Breaking Down Barriers & Understanding Perspectives.” The next virtual event will take place this Thursday, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. Participants will be a part of conversations between the team at the DESC De-Intensification Shelter, business owners, employees, neighbors and community members. Space is limited so make sure you register beforehand. Priority given for those in adjacent neighborhoods and businesses. Conversations take place every other Thursday and are scheduled through the end of 2020.

Trivia Night “Tricks & Trivia”

The next virtual trivia night will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Join us for this month’s trivia as we test your Halloween knowledge with “Tricks & Trivia.” Register the week of trivia for the Zoom information. Participants will be placed in a waiting room until 6:30. The games are designed and hosted by TriviaHub Live and consist of three rounds over 60 minutes. Contestants can play alone or as part of a team using a computer or mobile device. Prizes will be awarded. Extra entries for prizes if trivia participants wear costumes.

Eastside Cities Virtual Job Fair

The City of Renton, in collaboration with WorkSource Washington, Washington Employment Security Department and other Eastside cities (Bellevue, Issaquah, Kirkland and Redmond), will host a free online job fair. The fair will be held on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meet virtually with recruiters and HR managers from regional companies to learn about open career opportunities in the Eastside. Company representatives will conduct live chats via instant message and/or video call. Participating employers will be added continuously, so check back frequently. Make sure to register for the event.

Coulon Playground Replacement

Construction to replace the 17-year-old playground at Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park begins on Oct. 26. The design option was chosen by community members in a survey conducted this summer. Respondents preferred the design for its layout, variety, climbing structures and multi-person and inclusive swings. The new playground is anticipated to open in early 2021 and is funded by the taxpayers of Washington State through a State Direct Legislative Appropriation and Renton Regional Community Foundation Charles L. Custer Renton Park Memorial Fund.

Monitor Catch Basins

Our Public Works Department would like to remind residents to monitor catch basins near your home. By keeping them clear of leaves and other debris, we can help prevent local residential street flooding. Street sweepers are dispatched daily to clean up debris along major arterials, but your additional assistance is appreciated.

At the meeting on Monday, Oct. 19, the city council welcomed special presentations by King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn on COVID-19 Updates and AARP Representative Doug Shadel on the Age-Friendly City Designation.
