Former WA First Lady Lois Spellman Dies At 91

Spellman died about a week after her husband, former governor and King County executive John Spellman.

SEATTLE, WA - Former Washington first lady Lois Spellman died on Wednesday at age 91 - almost a week to the day her husband, former governor John Spellman, died at the same age.

The Secretary of State's office announced Spellman's death Thursday morning.

"Former Washington State First Lady Lois Spellman died Wednesday, January 24th, just days after the passing of her husband, former Washington State Governor John D. Spellman. Lois Elizabeth Murphy was born in 1927 in Havre, Montana. She and her husband prayed the Rosary together every night before bed for all 63 years of their marriage. They have six children and six grandchildren," a post on the Secretary of State's blog read.

Lois Spellman was first lady between January 1981 an January 1985 during her husband's only term as governor. The couple married in 1954. Before becoming governor, John Spellman served as the first King County executive between May 1969 and January 1981.
