Help Make Nonprofits More Equitable – Take the Race To Lead Survey
Your experience matters. Share it to shape the future of nonprofit leadership and equity.
We’re calling on all nonprofit staff to share your experiences by taking the 2025 Race to Lead Survey.
This survey is meant for paid nonprofit staff, philanthropy organizations, and LLCs operating as nonprofits or aligning in nonprofit work in any role, at any level. We highly encourage you to take this anonymous survey. It takes ~20 minutes, and it helps create a clearer picture of what’s really happening across our sector—especially for BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disabled, immigrant, and frontline staff. If you can't complete it in one sitting, you can go back to it at any time.
Over the past decade, the threats facing nonprofit staff and organizations have grown, from chronic underfunding to political attacks and rising burnout. How we respond to these challenges will shape the future of our sector. By uplifting the real experiences of nonprofit staff, especially those at the margins, Race to Lead helps frame the future of equity, leadership, and power in the nonprofit world.

An initiative of the Building Movement Project, the Race to Lead Survey is building the largest dataset on race and leadership in the nonprofit sector. Since 2016, this national research effort has examined how race, gender, and other identities impact who leads, who stays, and under what conditions. In 2026, we’ll mark a full decade of this critical effort.
Race to Lead 2025 explores timely new themes–including navigating political backlash and resilience strategies–while continuing to track persistent challenges and bright spots across the field.
