SEATTLE — Seattle is looking to vaccinate more than 52,000 people this week after a significant boost in supply from the federal government. Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan announced the ambitious goal last Friday, welcoming all who live or work in King County to make an appointment as soon as possible.

"For weeks, I’ve been asking the White House and federal government for supplies that match the immense need and demand in our communities," Durkan said. "We know that Seattle has the highest level of vaccine enthusiasm in the country, and if given the opportunity, we can vaccinate our residents and workers quickly, equitably, and on a massive scale. After constant advocacy, I’m thrilled that Seattle is starting to receive an allocation to actually vaccinate our communities at scale."

According to the city, this week's vaccine allocation includes more than 38,000 first doses and nearly 14,000 second doses for its four city-run clinics. The city expects the heightened level of supply will continue for weeks to come, and officials hope the improved outlook will go a long way toward helping Seattle reach its ultimate goal of 70 percent population immunity.

Since beginning in mid-January, Seattle's city-run efforts have administered over 127,000 doses to eligible adults, and providing 52,000 shots in a week would easily become a new record. At full capacity, officials said the Lumen Field site could administer 22,000 doses in a single day.

All four sites are stocked with Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which require two doses for maximum protection, spaced three to four weeks apart. Right now, only the Pfizer vaccine is authorized for use in 16 and 17-year-olds.

King County residents 16 and older are encouraged to sign up for Seattle's notification list or seek immediate openings by using the city's online scheduling tool or contacting customer service at 206-684-2489. By Sunday afternoon, more than 20,000 appointments were still available.

For older residents, Seattle's new "Good Neighbor" program allows anyone 60 or older to get vaccinated without an appointment at the Rainier Beach and West Seattle clinics, along with whoever accompanies them.

Residents seeking appointments outside Seattle have several ways to find other appointments, including options for south King County residents and those living on the Eastside.
