SEATTLE — Sound Transit recently accepted delivery of two brand new train cars, which will take to the tracks in the coming weeks to serve riders on the Sounder S Line. The new cab and coach cars are the first of 11 ordered by Sound Transit, which will add three passenger cabs and eight coach cars to the Sounder's fleet, bringing the grand total up to 78.

The new cars were built by Alstom and are equipped with the latest safety technology, including "Crash Energy Management," which helps trains absorb energy in the event of a crash and reduce impacts between cars. Sound Transit said the new cabs also have larger windshields to improve sight lines.

Two more cars are due for delivery next month, and each must go through rigorous inspections and testing before going into service, officials said. The Sound Transit Board approved the $46.5 million contract for 11 new train cars in 2020.
