📰 News we're reading

1. Water main break snarls traffic for hours on Highway 99 in Seattle (theolympian.com) — A water main break near Seattle’s Sodo neighborhood choked northbound Highway 99 to a single lane Tuesday morning, slowing commuters for hours. Seattle Public Utilities shut off water to about eight customers for repairs, restoring service late morning while crews stabilized and refilled the damaged roadway so traffic could fully reopen by early afternoon.

2. Merchandise destroyed and stolen in West Seattle game store burglary (kiro7.com) — A beloved West Seattle game store, Meeples Games, is recovering after thieves smashed their way in early Monday and stole or destroyed about $3,000 in merchandise, mainly trading cards. Owners say this is the latest in a series of break-ins hitting small Seattle businesses, and police are examining a hammer left behind for fingerprints.

3. Plans to build a new grocery store in old Seattle QFC in limbo (seattletimes.com) — Plans for a new grocery-anchored mixed-use project at Wedgwood Center have stalled after Seattle-based Security Properties walked away from its purchase agreement, citing financing challenges. That leaves Wedgwood neighbors still without a replacement for their former QFC, though the longtime property owner and Town & Country Markets say they remain interested in eventually bringing a store and redevelopment to the northeast Seattle site.

4. Seattle police union president announces he will not seek reelection (king5.com) — Seattle’s police union president Mike Solan is stepping down when his term ends in February, just weeks after celebrating a new contract that significantly boosts Seattle officers’ pay over the next five years. The deal, approved by the Seattle City Council, raises starting base salaries and offers some of the largest police pay increases in city history, even as the department continues navigating past controversies and leadership changes.

5. King County Sheriff invests in new tech to get DNA results quicker (fox13seattle.com) — King County Sheriff’s Office is rolling out a Rapid DNA machine that can deliver preliminary crime-scene results in about 90 minutes instead of weeks, potentially speeding investigations that affect Seattle-area residents. Funded by federal grants, the system is in testing now, with plans to expand to lower-level felony cases and add a second machine soon.
