SEATTLE — A new analysis from SafeWise found that homes in the Seattle-Tacoma metro are targeted by "porch pirates" more often than most other places in the nation. Researchers consulted Google Trends and FBI larceny data to develop this year's rankings and interviewed more than 1,000 people across America.

The survey estimated 260 million packages were swiped nationwide over the last year, which is a figure 50 million higher than found in 2021. The Seattle area ranked second among major U.S. metros for package thefts, trailing only San Francisco and ahead of Austin, Los Angeles and Portland. That's two spots higher on the list than last year's rankings.

Denver, which topped the list in 2021, fell off the top 10 this year, while half of the cities on the list were newcomers, SafeWise said. On the flip side, the cities that experienced the least package thefts include Miami, Tampa and Raleigh. Florida residents also expressed some of the highest worries about package theft, despite having three major cities on the bottom end of the list.

Safewise's survey found approximately three in four Americans had a package stolen at some point in their life, with close to 80 percent reporting thefts in the last year. Rughly 40 percent of stolen packages were valued between $50 and $100, amounting to a total loss valued at $19.5 billion. Survey respondents were also more likely to be victims of package theft than most other types of crime.
