Jones has spent more than 20 years working in education and government agencies, including six years at SPS.

According to the district, Jones' expertise is in areas of strategic planning, community engagement, change management and human resources.

"My mission is to create the conditions for students to thrive," Jones said on March 4, after the board of directors had voted to approve authorization to negotiate an employment contract with him. "We are going to do that together and I'm appreciative of what we've done so far.

"It's only been 10 months, it seems like a long time, but we've come through some real heavy, heavy times and we're still standing. Our students are strong, our staff is strong."

On Monday, Jones received the Thelma Dewitty Education Award from the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Committee (MLKCC). The award was presented on the 54th anniversary of King's death for "demonstrating exceptional leadership and advocacy to improve education in the lives of students and their families."

Jones received the award at a "Day of Remembrance & Awards Ceremony" at Seattle's Holgate Street Church of Christ.
