Space Needle To Be Repainted Galaxy Gold For 60th Anniversary

Five contest winners will even be allowed to help paint the needle's roof.

SEATTLE — On April 21, 1962, the Space Needle opened to the public. Once the centerpiece for the 1962 world's fair, this Seattle landmark is about to turn 60 years old, and the Space Needle Corporation is inviting the public to be a part of the historic event.

Seattle historians and longtime residents probably already know, but the Space Needle was not always a pristine white: it actually debuted with an "Orbital Olive" body, "Astronaut White" legs, a "Re-entry Red" saucer and "Galaxy Gold" roof. Those colors have been painted over or washed away by the sands of time, but the Needle does like to bring back its Galaxy Gold topper for special occasions— including its upcoming 60th birthday party.

As part of the Space Needle's 60th anniversary celebration, the public is invited to share their favorite Space Needle memories. Five grand prize winners will be selected to help paint the roof for the anniversary. Another 55 will receive a selection of prizes, including a VIP invite to the Loupe Lounge atop the needle, Space Needle tickets, Seattle International Film Festival passes and admission to the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibition below.

While its sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime event, this is not the first time the Space Needle has gotten painted up for a special occasion: its been painted crimson Washington State's Apple Cup win, red, white and blue for Memorial Day 2003, and was even painted Galaxy Gold as recently as 2012 for the 50th anniversary celebration.
