KING COUNTY, WA — Juneteenth is just a few days away, and communities across Puget Sound have celebrations planned through the long weekend. Juneteenth became a federal holiday last year, this year is the first it will also be recognized as state holiday in Washington. Since it lands on a Sunday this year, the holiday will be formally observed on Monday.

Juneteenth is oldest-known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States, commemorating the date in 1865 when word reached the last enslaved people in Texas that the Civil War had ended and they were free. The troops' arrival in Galveston came more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

While banks, post offices and other facilities will be closed on Monday, celebrations in King County are planned throughout the weekend. Here are a few to consider around the area.
