Suspect appears in court after hit-and-run leaves pedestrian injured in Spokane (khq.com) — Spokane police say a driver accused of hitting a pedestrian and fleeing has now appeared in court and is held in Spokane County Jail on $50,000 bond. The victim suffered brain and abdominal bleeding but is expected to survive, and investigators credit witness accounts with helping track down the suspect after the North Cincinnati Road collision.

Eagle Holiday Classic, region's largest high school basketball tourney, features 41 varsity teams -- 15 from Greater Spokane League (theolympian.com) — Spokane-area hoops fans can stay close to home as West Valley High hosts the three-day Eagle Holiday Classic starting Saturday, featuring 41 varsity teams and 15 from the Greater Spokane League. Spokane, Cheney, Rogers, North Central, and others all in action alongside several other regional holiday events.

Federal money coming to train psychologists for rural eastern Washington schools (spokanepublicradio.org) — A new $3.5 million federal grant will pay graduate students from Spokane-area colleges and the University of Washington to work as school-psychologist interns in Medical Lake and other rural northeastern Washington schools. The paid internships, based on Medical Lake’s existing mental health model, aim to boost counseling support for students, families, and staff while requiring graduates to serve in local schools after certification.
   

4. Man born on Christmas Day brings holiday cheer with Saint Nicholas Christmas Foundation (khq.com) — A Spokane man born on Christmas Day is turning his birthday into a mission by running the Saint Nicholas Christmas Foundation, based in Spokane and now active in six states. His nonprofit buys gifts for assisted-living residents without family and supplies teddy bears for children’s hospitals and first responders to comfort kids in crisis.
   

5. 25 years later: Playfair Race Course is long gone, but memories, records and a few treasures remain (spokesman.com) — Spokane’s long-gone Playfair Race Course lives on through memories, records, and even a salvaged fire hydrant now tucked in a South Hill garden.
