📰 News we're reading

1. Spokane man with six DUI convictions sentenced to more than 5 years in prison (kxly.com) — A Spokane man with a long history of impaired driving has been sentenced to just over five years in prison for a 2024 multi-vehicle crash in North Spokane, where witnesses stopped him from fleeing. Prosecutors cited seven DUI convictions and multiple hit-and-run and suspended-license offenses, and the judge rejected a treatment-focused alternative, stressing community safety as holiday-season DUI risks rise.

2. New Year's Eve events to light up Spokane and Coeur d'Alene (khq.com) — If you’re celebrating New Year’s Eve in Spokane tonight, Riverfront Park will feature 9 p.m. fireworks, a DJ skate night at the Numerica Skate Ribbon, and a Pavilion Winter Light Show leading into a midnight countdown. Just across the border, Coeur d’Alene is offering cruises and themed parties if you’re up for a short drive.

3. This day in history: Septic tanks polluting aquifer in Spokane Valley, Army Corps warned. More were dying in car crashes (spokesman.com) — A historical look back shows how septic tanks in Spokane Valley once threatened the region’s aquifer, prompting a push for a sewage treatment plant near Felts Field. The piece also recalls Spokane’s fight for a civic auditorium and the city’s early struggles with rising car crash deaths and pedestrian injuries a century ago.

4. Bob Egger, of Egger's Better Meats in Spokane, has died (kxly.com) — Spokane is mourning Robert “Bob” Egger, who opened the South Hill Egger’s Better Meats and Seafood location in 1963 and helped build a family-run business that now includes four markets in Spokane and Deer Park. His family remembers him for his work ethic, commitment to customer service, and dedication to keeping the business and relatives closely connected.

5. Man linked to two Spokane killings dies on parole in Boise (spokesman.com) — Spokane families connected to two long-unsolved killings are grappling with news that the man investigators linked to both cases has died in Boise after collapsing at a gym, ending any chance of a local trial. Police and prosecutors here had been preparing potential murder charges in the death of Kala Williams, while relatives of both Williams and missing Spokane woman Heather Higgins now fear answers may never come.
