📰 News we're reading

1. Spokane police launch outreach program to combat rising property crime near Gonzaga (kxly.com) — Spokane police are responding to a spike in property crimes around Gonzaga University’s Logan neighborhood by sending volunteer cadets door-to-door with prevention tips. Officers say 356 offenses have been reported in recent months, and they’re urging residents to secure homes, improve lighting and visibility, use security tools when possible, and stay connected with neighbors and Crime Check to deter opportunistic thieves.

2. Washington's 95% nicotine tax forces vape shops to prepare for major price increases (kxly.com) — Spokane vape customers and shop owners face steep price hikes in 2026 as Washington’s new 95% excise tax on all nicotine products kicks in, dramatically raising costs at places like Lilac City Vapor. The owner is cutting inventory and lobbying Olympia, warning popular vapes could jump nearly 50% in price, while health advocates say the tax could curb addiction and reduce medical costs.

3. GSL basketball: Short-handed Central Valley girls lose big against No. 1 Sandpoint; Deer Park girls beat Selah at SunDome tourney (spokesman.com) — Spokane-area hoops fans saw Central Valley’s defending 3A state champion girls routed by top-ranked Sandpoint while missing injured standout Drea Domebo, an all-Greater Spokane League honoree as a freshman. Other Greater Spokane League and nearby programs, including Mead, West Valley, Cheney, Deer Park, Medical Lake and Pullman, notched notable wins in holiday tournament and nonleague action across the region.

4. Northeast Washington couple donates 100-acre tree farm after 30 years of restoration (spokanepublicradio.org) — A longtime Chewelah couple has donated their meticulously restored 100-acre tree farm to WSU Extension Forestry, turning it into a hands-on research and teaching site for Eastern Washington forest health and wildfire prevention. With one child now living in Spokane and another out of state, they chose donation over sale so students, landowners, and agencies can learn practical forest management on the property.
