1. 2 arrested in Charleston on drug possession, child neglect charges (wchstv.com) — Police say two adults were arrested in Charleston after officers forced entry into an apartment and allegedly found a small child amid accessible drugs, syringes and a stolen handgun. Both suspects face child neglect and drug charges and are being held on bond at South Central Regional Jail, with one also wanted in previous local cases.
   

2. Trail boss: Hatfield-McCoy Trails director rides into sunset after 20-year career (wvgazettemail.com) — A longtime South Charleston resident, Jeffrey Lusk, has retired after 20 years leading the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, helping expand the network from 400 to more than 1,000 miles across nine counties. His work turned the southern coalfields into a major off-road tourism draw, bringing tens of thousands of visitors and millions of dollars into West Virginia each year.
   

3. Powerball jackpot climbs to $1 billion (wvnstv.com) — From Charleston, state lottery officials say the Powerball jackpot has surged to $1 billion ahead of the Saturday, Dec. 13 drawing. West Virginians can buy tickets for $2, or $3 with Power Play, before the 9:59 p.m. deadline for a shot at the massive prize.
   

4. Healthy Neighborhood program gets grant to fight food insecurity (wowktv.com) — A Charleston-based Healthy Neighborhood program just received a major grant from the Highmark West Virginia Charitable Fund for Health to expand its work fighting food insecurity. Launched in 2023, the initiative helps West Virginians access nutritious foods, treating “food as medicine” with doctors writing prescriptions for healthy groceries. The new funding will support continued growth across the state.
   

5. Class A all-state football team (theintermountain.com) — From Charleston, the Class A all-state football team has been announced, highlighting standout players from Wheeling Central, Pendleton County, Clay-Battelle, Wahama, Meadow Bridge, and more. The list details first and second team selections plus honorable mentions, along with impressive season stats. Wooden plaque keepsakes are also available for honorees through the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.
