📰 News we're reading

1. City of Charleston announces allocation of $540K in opioid settlement grants (wchstv.com) — Charleston officials have directed $540,000 in opioid settlement money to more than a dozen local programs focused on prevention, treatment and recovery. From after-school education to maternal treatment support and Recovery Point Charleston upgrades, these grants aim to strengthen services residents rely on as additional settlement funds continue through 2029.

2. West Virginia American Water testing customer pipelines for lead (wowktv.com) — Charleston residents will soon see West Virginia American Water crews in their neighborhoods as the company digs test holes near meters to identify any remaining lead service lines. The multi-year project, driven by federal EPA rules, will prioritize older homes from the 1920s and 1930s and could lead to full pipe replacements starting in 2028, with work continuing through 2037.

3. Kanawha County ambulance workers to receive pay raises amid staffing concerns (wowktv.com) — Kanawha County’s ambulance authority, based in Charleston, just approved significant hourly raises for paramedics, EMTs and dispatchers to combat staffing shortages that threaten local emergency response. Leaders acknowledge the move deepens an existing budget deficit but say retaining experienced crews is critical while they expand non-emergency transports and cut costs to stabilize finances.

4. Treasurer Pack marks 11th anniversary of ABLE Act with program improvements (wvnews.com) — From his Charleston office, State Treasurer Larry Pack announced improvements to West Virginia’s ABLE savings program that will take effect January 1. Changes tied to the federal ABLE Age Adjustment Act will expand eligibility, lower costs, and add new saving options, potentially helping tens of thousands more West Virginians with disabilities build financial security.

5. Review of scoring in West Virginia cheerleading championship results in Class AA co-champs (wchstv.com) — A statewide review of scoring at the West Virginia Cheerleading State Championships, held in Charleston in November, has led to Lincoln and Westside high schools being named Class AA co-champions. Officials discovered clerical and recording errors in the tumbling rubric scores, which, once corrected, produced a tie. Tug Valley, Brooke, and Woodrow Wilson also secured titles in their respective classes.
