Besides Wayne County, other WV counties dealing with school closing issues (wchstv.com) — From Huntington, state education officials are warning that shrinking enrollment is forcing tough school-closure decisions, including a key vote on Dunlow and Genoa Elementary in neighboring Wayne County. Leaders cite school choice and Covid for a loss of 6,000 students in a year, which cuts state aid. They say only major economic growth reversing population decline will ease the pressure on local schools.
   

2. Peoples Bank presents check to United Way of the River Cities (wchstv.com) — A $5,000 donation from Peoples Bank to United Way of the River Cities in Huntington will support local families and community programs across the region. The gift comes from the bank’s “Jeans for Hunger Awareness” payroll-deduction effort and is part of United Way’s broader workforce campaign with more than 200 business partners.
   

3. Koehler, Judy Rodgers (nrvnews.com) — Family and friends in Huntington are remembering Julia Ann “Judy” Rodgers Koehler, who was born in the city in 1938 and passed away at age 87 on November 22. A longtime microbiologist and lab co‑founder, she leaves behind three sons, three grandchildren, and many relatives. Funeral services are set for January 3, 2026, at Bower Funeral Home in Pulaski.
   

4. Host Marshall routs Hilltoppers 77-61 (bgdailynews.com) — Marshall’s men’s basketball team gave home fans in Huntington plenty to cheer about Wednesday night, rolling past Western Kentucky 77-61 behind a dominant second half. The Thundering Herd used multiple big runs to turn a tight first half into a comfortable win, holding WKU to a season-low 61 points and showcasing balanced scoring and strong defense on their home floor.
   

5. Journalist Rabel dies at 86 (irontontribune.com) — Huntington readers may remember Emmy-winning CBS journalist Ed Rabel for his later work as an adjunct professor at Marshall University in Huntington. The St. Albans native, whose career began on Tri-State airwaves and included major international coverage, has died at 86 in Virginia after decades in broadcasting and public service.
