Officials warn the massive project will likely require higher water rates, though they hope state and federal funding can soften the impact on residents.

2. Discussions continue on future of County Road fire station (weirtondailytimes.com) — Weirton officials are weighing how to reopen the County Road Fire Station, a move that would require hiring six firefighters and likely finding a new revenue source, possibly through a Municipal Service Fee increase. Fire leaders say reopening is crucial as the city grows and call for detailed cost planning in early 2026, though any new staffing likely wouldn’t begin until July 1.

3. Vacant Downtown Weirton bank building to become Business Development Corporation headquarters (wtrf.com) — A long-vacant former People’s Bank building on Main Street is being renovated to house the Business Development Corporation’s new headquarters, signaling fresh investment in downtown Weirton. Partnering with the College of St. Joseph the Worker, the project doubles as hands-on training for skilled trades students and a key step in the city’s broader revitalization, with completion expected in June 2026.

4. Weirton Police seek applicants to fill vacancies (wtov9.com) — Weirton residents interested in law enforcement have a new opportunity as the city’s police department seeks to fill several vacancies after recent retirements, aiming to return to full staffing. The department now runs 12-hour shifts, offers a starting salary just over $62,000, strong benefits, and a $10,000 sign-on bonus for qualified certified officers, with applications due by Jan. 9.

5. Salvation Army of Weirton brightens holidays with food, toy giveaways for local families (wtov9.com) — Weirton families in need can pick up holiday food bags and toys at The Salvation Army’s local fellowship hall, with giveaways running Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.
