7 Wisconsin Students Win College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarships
Seven high school students from Wisconsin were named among 750 additional National Merit Scholarship winners on Monday.
WISCONSIN — Seven high school students from across Wisconsin were named winners in the latest round of National Merit Scholarship awards.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation gives out the undergraduate college scholarships throughout each year to high school students who complete a detailed application with an essay showing leadership, endorsements, academic record and community activities, according to a news release from NMSC.
The seven latest winners from Wisconsin, out of 750 nationwide, were selected and sponsored by colleges and universities across the U.S., NMSC said. Each college selected the scholarship winners from people who plan to attend their institution.

The college-sponsored awards provide between $500 to $2,000 annually over four years of undergraduate study, according to NMSC. For 2023, over 150 colleges and universities sponsored over 3,800 scholarships.

- Logan Ion, Hudson High School in Hudson. National Merit University of Minnesota Scholarship with a probable career field in astrophysics.
- Matthew Shepherd, Winneconne High School in Winneconne. National Merit University of Tulsa Scholarship with a probable career field in physics.
- Lauren Lamson, Middleton High School in Middleton. National Merit Vanderbilt University Scholarship with a probable career field in journalism.
- Aidyn Maher, Madison Country Day School in Waunakee. National Merit Tufts University Scholarship with a probable career field in medicine.
- Nina Allen, D.C. Everest High School in Weston. National Merit University of Wisconsin-Madison Scholarship with a probable career field in biochemistry.
- Timothy Groth, Arrowhead High School in Hartland. National Merit Drake University Scholarship with a probable career field in actuarial science.
- Owen Erickson, High School of Health Sciences in Wales. National Merit Michigan State University Scholarship with a probable career field in biomedical engineering.
