Northern Lights Possible Monday Night Over Wisconsin

If skies clear over Wisconsin by Monday evening, a geomagnetic storm may put on a show for those away from city lights.

WISCONSIN — Monday is expected to have thunderstorms for southern Wisconsin, but a break in the clouds could offer a glimpse of the Northern Lights. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a moderate geomagnetic storm watch Monday, noting the aurora could be visible as low as Wisconsin, New York and Washington.

The storm is classified as a "G2" on the Space Weather Prediction Center's five-point scale, resulting from a coronal mass ejection from the sun on Saturday.

Despite being only moderate strength, a G2 storm can have just enough magnitude to make the Northern Lights visible around the northeast Wisconsin region.

Light pollution can make the aurora difficult to spot, and the best bet for viewing is to get away from the city. Door County by Lake Michigan is a premier choice for aurora chasers and Lake Superior is one of the best locations for observing the northern lights in the Midwest, according to travel guide Rove.me.

The Space Weather Prediction Center has a list of tips for viewing the aurora and updates its dashboards regularly with the latest geomagnetic conditions to check before heading out the door.
