LA CROSSE, WI — It's October, and the leaves have started to change in Wisconsin. But what’s the best place to take in the natural splendor?

Real estate company Rocket Homes says it’s La Crosse. The far western city recently made the company’s list of The 12 Best Cities To View Fall Foliage, ranking second in the Midwest, behind Bloomington, Indiana, and above Carbondale, Illinois.

Leaf peepers looking for the best autumn has to offer around La Crosse can take in the beauty of fall trees along the mighty Mississippi River or atop the area’s majestic bluffs, according to Rocket Homes. The company used data analysis from BestPlaces.net, which assessed deciduous tree coverage, plant hardiness, latitude and elevation, to make its list.

Rocket Homes predicted the ideal viewing day for the fall colors in La Crosse would be Sept. 27, although a foliage map pioneered by statistics expert David Angotti projected a much later peak, starting around mid-October.
