Wisconsin Ranks Among Safer States In America, Study Finds

The personal finance website compared all 50 states across factors ranging from violent crime to road safety and disaster readiness.

MADISON, WI — Wisconsin ranks 19th in the country for overall safety, according to a new analysis by the personal finance website WalletHub.

The study compared all 50 states across 52 factors, including violent crime rates, financial stability, road conditions, and disaster preparedness.

Wisconsin’s strengths lie in financial safety and road safety, where it ranked sixth and fifth, respectively.

The state also placed near the middle of the pack for personal safety (25th) and workplace safety (31st), while its emergency preparedness ranking (20th) helped balance out its score.

Neighboring Minnesota ranked higher, coming in at No. 8 overall. Vermont, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire topped the list, while Louisiana and Mississippi ranked as the least safe.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said the safest states “protect their residents from harm in a multitude of different ways, from keeping crime rates low and maintaining safe roadways to having strong economies and job markets that prevent people from falling into dangerous financial situations.”

The report found that Wisconsin’s low rate of traffic fatalities contributed significantly to its standing. But overall, the state sits comfortably in the middle tier for safety.
