Brookfield 'Cannot' Issue Health Order In Wake Of Safer At Home

BROOKFIELD, WI — Brookfield Mayor Steven Ponto says the city's hands are tied when it comes to crafting public health orders now that the Wisconsin Supreme Court has overturned Gov. Tony Evers' Safer At Home order.

"The City of Brookfield is under the jurisdiction of the Waukesha County Health Department and, therefore, the City cannot issue health-related orders for businesses," he wrote Thursday.

Brookfield city officials are encouraging businesses that are re-opening or expanding operations to "take appropriate measures to earn the confidence of their employees and customers" by following Waukesha County Health Department orders, following the guidelines in the Badger Bounce Back Plan, among others regarding social distancing, cleaning and disinfecting.

"On the City’s behalf, I am proud of the unselfish efforts our residents and businesses have made to manage the spread of COVID-19. I encourage everyone to continue staying safe and
using good hygienic practices so we can avoid a spike in COVID-19 cases, thereby allowing us to continue the good progress we have made thus far in fighting the COVID-19 virus and its effects," he wrote. "Thank you for your cooperation and support. Together we are working to minimize the impact of COVID-19, and together we will get through this. My fervent hope is that all City of Brookfield residents will remain healthy and safe during this unprecedented time."
