According to a press release from the Nicolet High School Theatre Department:
Nicolet High School's 2011-12 theatre season will open with a production of Larry Shue's THE NERD. This hilarious comedy was originally produced by the Milwaukee Repertory Theater in 1981 and has grown to be a Milwaukee favorite. Performances will be held Oct. 28, 29 and Nov. 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. Call 414-351-8174 for
reservations.
Set in 1981, the story involves Willum Cubbert an aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Indiana who has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, "you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you"--so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his 34th birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd"--a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence, and less tact. And Rick stays on and on, his continued presence among Willum and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence--a dire development which, happily, is staved off by the surprising ending of the play.
The cast includes Garrett Hanson as Willum Cubbert, Zoe Devorkin and Jake Rickun as friends Tansy and Axel, Connor Wahrman as Warnock Waldgrave, Rachel Halstrom as Celia Waldgrave, Elena Salvat as Thory Waldgrave and Steven Long as Rick Steadman. The Director's Assistant
is Emily Poklar. THE NERD is being directed and designed by Kenn Miller, Director of Theatre Arts at Nicolet.
