Bites Nearby: Kopp's Frozen Custard

Smooth, creamy chocolate shakes and behemoth burgers make Kopp's a local specialty.

A line of black and white cows line the back of the restaurant and keep watch over the parking lot. With no seating inside, on a nice day you'll find dozens of locals camping out on benches, eating in their cars with the windows down or doors open and the occasional man-down ice cream pile on the sidewalk.

Kopp's Frozen Custard, 5373 N. Port Washington Rd., Glendale, is a local favorite that actually began right here in Milwaukee. The menu features your 50's-style diner with milk shakes and burgers, but you can't beat the quality.

When you walk in, all the staff have on white, paper-forage hats, white shirts, pants and an apron, making the restaurant look very sterile. People hang in the back, waiting for their number to be called to one of the colored microphones, while others wait in line to place their order.

There are more custard than food options on the menu, but it's hard not to find something that doesn't go with a good ol' fashioned milkshake.

I went with a bacon cheeseburger ($3.75) with the works. At Kopps, the works means your sandwich is piled high with ketchup, mustard, fried onions, pickles and mayo. These burgers are monstrous, so I never even need a side of fries ($1.85) or onion rings ($2). They also have chicken sandwhiches ($4.60), fish sandwhiches ($2.90) and grilled cheese ($1.95).

Instead of your standard soda, as is customary at Kopps, I pair my burger with a milkshake ($3.40), usually chocolate. But the custard is their specialty, with so many flavors they have a "flavor forecast" and "flavor alerts" so you can get a notification sent to your email when you favorite flavor is available.

Each day Kopps features special flavors, in addition to their featured shake; this month is blue moon, and sundae, currently dinosaur tracks. The forecast has a long list of the specialty flavors that are coming up, like Butter Almond, with rich, creamy custard, butterscotch and almond, and a sprinkle of fresh roasted almonds on top on April 20.

Here's a few other forecasted flavors featured on their website

  • April 21 - Snickers Chunky Cheesecake: America's favorite candy bar and Wisconsin's favorite custard with New York's favorite cheesecake. Only at Kopp's!
  • April 23 - Orange Dream: Swirls of frosty orange and smooth vanilla custard are combined for the perfect reproduction of our childhood favorite. All that's missing is the stick!
  • April 24 -Bunny Hop: Imagine your marshmallow cream Easter eggs as a custard! Ours is flavored with a light raspberry and marshmallow center, laced with Chambord, flakes of chocolate and ribbons of marshmallow. Everybunny will love it!

Hours: Kopps is open daily from 10:30 a.m. until 11 p.m.
