Coyote Conflicted? The Humane Society of the United States Can Help

A number of residents have been unnerved by the presence of coyotes in their neighborhood, but a seminar is being held to help neighbors feel a little more at ease.

The seminar, a collaboration between the Village of Bayside and the Humane Society of the United States, will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bayside Middle School, 601 E. Ellsworth Lane.

A number of residents living near the Schlitz Audubon Center believe there's been a dramatic rise in the coyote population and some have reported loosing pets.

Lynsey White Dasher, urban wildlife specialist for the HSUS, will focus on how neighbors can protect their pets from coyotes, reduce coyote attractants in neighborhoods and haze bold coyotes.

According to the press release: "Coyote hazing helps restore the fear of humans back into coyotes who have become habituated to people and involves the systematic use of deterrents, including noisemakers, projectiles and water hoses." 

An additional workshop will be held for police and animal control officers to further train them in responding to coyote calls.
