Knights Update: Girls Tennis Takes Second in State
A roundup of sports events from Nicolet High School last week, and a look ahead to this week.

Here is a roundup of sports events for the last week at, courtesy of Athletic Director Kirk Krychowiak:
The Nicolet girls tennis team defeated Middleton on Friday in the first round of the WIAA State girls tennis team tournament 5-2 then went on to defeat DSHA 4-3 in the semifinals on Saturday and advance to the final round against Homestead. The team lost to Homestead 5-2 and took second in state. The No. 3 doubles team of Claire Maxon and Mercedes Halaska beat the No. 3 doubles team of Homestead. The No. 2 doubles team of Michelle Margolies and Erin Wathen beat the No. 2 doubles team of Homestead.
The cross country team qualified two runners for Saturday's WIAA State Cross Country meet in Wisconsin Rapids. Lauren Cunningham and Josh Greenberg will represent Nicolet this weekend.
The girls swim team is preparing for the sectionals and closing in on the end of their season. On Friday, the team will host the NSC junior varsity swim meet then will travel to Cedarburg on Saturday for the varsity conference meet. Thursday is the junior varisty/varsity diving conference meet at Cedarburg.
The boys volleyball team finished fifth in the tough Homestead invite on Saturday. During the week, the boys lost to Germantown in the last conference match of the year but still ended up with a share of the NSC Title. The junior varsity team finished their season as the regular season conference champions and finished second in the conference tournament. The frosh team finished second in the regular season and won the conference tournament. This week, the team travels to Marquette to play the top ranked team in the state as a warm-up for the State Tournament as they try to qualify for their fifth consecutive trip to the WIAA boys volleyball State Tournament.
The girls volleyball team won a share of the Conference title and began their run at a state tournament berth with an easy victory in the Regional Championship vs. Rufus King at home last Saturday. Next up is DSHA at Brookfield Central in the opening round of the sectionals at Brookfield East High School on Thursday night. A win would put the girls in the Sectional Championship game at Central on Saturday at 7 p.m. with a berth in the State Tournament the following weekend in Green Bay at stake.
A fan bus is scheduled to leave Nicolet at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday if we can get enough people signed up. Cost is just $5. Please sign up in the Athletic Office as soon as possible. A bus will be scheduled for Saturday at 5:30 p.m. should we defeat DSHA on Thursday night.
The Nicolet Booster Club will be hosting a fundraiser at BD's Mongolian Grill on Nov. 10. Booster Club cards are still available in the Athletic Office. Please send your emails to mkappel5@wi.rr.com to be included on the master mailing list.
The Nicolet Open House will take place on Nov. 8.
The girls basketball Head Coach Corey Wolf has been selected by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association as the recipient of the 2010-11 NFHS Coaches Association Girls Basketball Coach of the Year Award for Wisconsin. Annually, the NFHS identifies and recognizes a coach from each state for significant achievement in their sport. State level recipients are considered for NFHS Sectional recognition. National Coaches of the Year are then chosen from the sectional winners.

Award recipients are selected based upon a variety of criteria including their coaching record, background, coaching honors, and involvement in community and school organizations. Each year approximately 1000 coaches are recognized at the state level, 168 coaches are recognized at the sectional level and 21 coaches are recognized at the national level. Wisconsin coaches are members of Section 4, which represents the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The mission of the NFHS Coaches Association is to enhance the professional development of all high school sports coaches in order to improve interscholastic athletics in America.
