The Wisconsin Highland Games

When: Aug. 30, 5 p.m.

What: Wisconsin's largest Highland  Games kick off Friday night for the 12th year celebration of all things Scottish, Irish and Celtic. Hear the mighty roar of the bagpipes, see the kilted athletes perform their feats of strength, watch the spinning, leaping Highland dancers, shoot the longbow, toss the battle axe, and grab a pint at St. Andrew's Pub.

Sheep Dog Trials

When: Aug. 31, 9 a.m.

Where:  Badlands Sno-park

What: Border collies and their trainers work together in the fields to herd sheep through various obstacles and challenges. Some of the best dogs/trainers in the midwest will be showcasing their skills.

Mushroom and Fungi Talk

When: Aug. 31, 11 a.m.

Where: Willow River State Park

What: Come to the Nature Center classroom at 11 a.m. to listen to a one-hour talk by mushroom enthusiast, Joni Garbe. Learn about these fascinating decomposers, the good and the bad. Maybe even pick up a few mushroom hunting skills.
