MILWAUKEE, WI — Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect starting this afternoon and continuing into the evening across southeast Wisconsin.

Flurries that have been ongoing will transition to steadier snow this morning, with snow spreading across the region from west to east by mid to late morning, the National Weather Service said.

The snow will persist through tonight, with the heaviest snowfall expected this afternoon and evening.

A total of 3 to 6 inches of snow is forecast for most areas, with up to 5 to 9 inches possible near Lake Michigan. Areas to the north and west of Madison are likely to receive lower snowfall amounts.

Snow will gradually taper off from west to east late tonight, generally between midnight and 3 a.m. It may linger a bit longer along the lakeshore but should come to an end by daybreak Thursday.

Today: Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 27. East wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Tonight: Snow, mainly before 4am. Low around 14. Northeast wind 10 to 15 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 18. Wind chill values between zero and 5. West wind around 15 mph.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 4. Wind chill values between -5 and zero. West wind 5 to 10 mph.

Friday: A 40 percent chance of snow after noon. Increasing clouds, with a high near 28. South wind 5 to 15 mph.

Friday Night: Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 22. South wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Saturday: A 50 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. Light and variable wind becoming north 10 to 15 mph in the morning.

Saturday Night: A 40 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 11. North wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Sunday: A 20 percent chance of snow before noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 18.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around -3.
