WISCONSIN — Almost 70 percent of state employees have reported taking at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, the Wisconsin Department of Administration said.

87 percent of state employees have shared their vaccination status after being required to do so, the department said in a statement. There are 30,000 state employees statewide.

All state employees, interns and contract staff have been required to provide information on their COVID-19 vaccination status, the Wisconsin Division of Personnel Management said in a statement.

“It’s clear that while we still have room for improvement, the majority of executive branch employees are doing the right thing when it comes to COVID,” Department of Administration Secretary Joel Brennan said. Brennan said vaccination remains the best tool for beating back the COVID-19 surge brought by the delta variant.

Nearly 58 percent of Wisconsinites are vaccinated of their own accord, state health services data said.

State employees aren't required to be vaccinated, though Gov. Tony Evers considered making it a requirement in late August, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Milwaukee Public Schools voted Friday to require its employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19. This includes all volunteers and interns.

President Joe Biden mandated Friday that all employers with more than 100 employees would have to get their employees vaccinated or get weekly coronavirus tests. The order extends to facilities that get Medicare or Medicaid funding.
