The fire broke out late Tuesday afternoon and residents are advised to avoid the area.

MILWAUKEE, WI — The smoke can be seen for miles as firefighters battle a four-alarm blaze at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in downtown Milwaukee Tuesday afternoon.
Witnesses on the scene say that flames have completely engulfed the historic structure, which was built of cream brick in 1878, and have toppled one of the church's spires in the process.
Multiple ladder trucks poured water onto the smoldering structure in an effort to quell the flames just before 5 p.m. Tuesday. From the air, the buildings, main steeple remained intact as well as its west-facing facade. The church's roof and worship space were consumed by the flames, leaving only the bare wood and iron support structure underneath.
