Homeland Security Report Cites Wisconsin Coronavirus Increases

MILWAUKEE, WI — Wisconsin's rapidly increasing coronavirus case increases have drawn the attention of U.S. officials in an unreleased report that was obtained by a national news outlet.

According to NBC News, Wisconsin and two of its metro areas were cited in a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Data and Analytics Task Force report dated May 7.

NBC News says the report was not released to the public until a reporter obtained a copy. NBC says the report is "at odds with President Donald Trump's declaration Monday that 'all throughout the country, the numbers are coming down rapidly.'"

The report defined Minnesota, the District of Columbia, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Nebraska, Kansas, Maryland, Illinois and Iowa as "Locations with increasing cases." The report's critera was locations with more than 10 percent of a week-to-week increases in cases; more than 200 new cases and more than 40 new cases per 100,000 people in the past week. Report figures state that Wisconsin has seen 2,582 new cases in the last seven days, amounting to 41 cases per 100,000 people. That's an increase of 42.3 percent, according to the report.

According to the report, Minnesota has seen the larges spike — a 95.5 percent increase in new cases and cases per 100,000 people in the last seven days.

Taking a deeper dive into the data, two Wisconsin counties made the top 10 when it comes to new coronavirus cases.

According to the report, Kenosha County has seen a 155.3 percent increase in cases, and Racine County has seen a 103.4 percent increase in cases over the last seven days.
