Man Dies After Fight Involving Off-Duty Milwaukee Police Officer

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office says a 25-year-old man died after a fight involving an off-duty Milwaukee police officer.

MILWAUKEE, WI — A 25-year-old Milwaukee man died after he and an off-duty Milwaukee police officer were involved in a fight on Sunday morning, authorities said.

Police say the off-duty officer, later identified as Michael Mattioli, was arrested. Mattioli is a 13-year veteran of the police department and has been placed on full suspension, authorities said.

On Monday, authorities with the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 25-year-old Joel Acevedo, saying also that he died from his injuries at St. Luke's Medical Center on Saturday.

According to Milwaukee police, officers were sent to the 4500 block of W. Cleveland Ave. just after 7:40 a.m. Sunday. April 19 for the report of a battery complaint.

Police say they found Acevedo laying on the ground, unresponsive. Authorities say he suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the St. Luke's Medical Center.

According to a JSOnline report, Acevedo was at a party that was hosted by Mattioli. A fight broke out at the party, resulting in Acevedo getting seriously injured.

The state is currently under a stay-at-home order, which prohibits large gatherings and non-essential travel. The stay-at-home order was recently extended until late May. Milwaukee police are actively enforcing the order.
