To say that Washington ace Max Scherzer has Milwaukee's number is a bit of an understatement.
As a team, the Brewers are batting .180 against Scherzer. Milwaukee's best hitter, Christian Yelich, remains out with a fractured kneecap. In 31 career plate appearances against Scherzer, he had 10 hits, including three home runs. According to Rotowire, Milwaukee's top four hitters — Ryan Braun, Lorenzo Cain, Mike Moustakas and Yasmani Grandal — collectively have seven hits in 78 at-bats against Scherzer — batting a paltry .089 against the Washington hurler.
Though it needs to be said that in a one-game, winner-take-all situation, stranger things have happened.
As a unit, the Nationals are batting .250 against Brewers ace Brandon Woodruff, notching 13 hits in 56 plate appearances. Woodruff had a breakout season in 2019. He earned his first All-Star appearance and has been throwing the ball well. Woodruff owns a 3.63 earned run average and an 11-3 record across 22 starts and five additional appearances this year.
Scorching September Lands Brewers Playoff Spot
It was an unlikely climb for the Brew Crew, whose record stood at 71-68 on Sept. 5. They were tied with the New York Mets and were five games behind the Chicago Cubs for the second Wild Card spot in the National League.
Since then, Milwaukee lost its MVP-caliber outfielder in Yelich — and then went on a scorching 17-2 run. The Brewers finished the season at 89-73 - good for second place in the NL Central division as well as the second Wild Card spot in the National League.
