MILWAUKEE, WI — Milwaukee appears all but certain to host the 2024 Republican National Convention after the Nashville Metro Council rejected yet another proposal Tuesday night, Tennessee television station WTVF reported.

In July, the convention's site selection committee recommended that Milwaukee hosts the event, according to Politico. That came shortly after Nashville pulled a draft agreement at the last minute, a report by The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said. Both cities were finalists for the convention by that point.

Further efforts from Nashville to host the convention came up Tuesday evening, but the city rejected the agreement in a 22-10 vote, WISN12 reported. Milwaukee had already approved a similar agreement in June, the WISN report said.

An official decision on where the convention is hosted can be expected in the coming days, but Milwaukee seems to be the only remaining contender.

Milwaukee's 200-page bid to host the convention, which came in December of 2021, touted the city's access to the lake, venues, festivals, culinary scene and more, the Associated Press reported.

"We're an amazing Midwest city, and we're also a purple state and that's always attractive for a convention," said Visit Milwaukee CEO Peggy Williams-Smith in a statement at the time of the bid.

The convention, held every four years, will decide which Republican candidate is sent to run for president.

The possibility of the convention coming to Milwaukee brought concerns from various local activist groups.

A letter addressed to the City of Milwaukee in May, penned by Voces de la Frontera Action, Power to the Polls, Milwaukee Area Labor Council, Never Again is Now and SEIU, called the organization one "that supports White Supremacists, the violent attempted coup at the U.S. Capitol to overthrow a democratic election, and continues to engineer new ways to undermine fair and democratic elections."

Milwaukee hosted the Democratic National Convention in 2020, but the event was culled to a largely virtual affair as the COVID-19 pandemic had taken hold.
