Milwaukee Toddler Expected To Live After Shooting Himself

Police said the 2-year-old suffered serious injuries after grabbing an unsecured family gun. A 30-year-old male was arrested in the case.

MILWAUKEE, WI —A 2-year-old boy in Milwaukee is expected to survive after suffering an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday when he grabbed an unattended firearm, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.

A 30-year-old Milwaukee man has been arrested in connection with the shooting, police said.

According to the MPD, the shooting took place at approximately 11:25 a.m. in the 2500 block of N. 12th Street. After suffering a gunshot wound, the child arrived at a local hospital for treatment for serious injuries, authorities said.

Police said the criminal case will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the coming days.

The MPD reminded residents to keep firearms locked with a gun lock and secured in an area that is out of reach of children.

Earlier this month, leaders in Milwaukee announced a gun safety initiative that includes gun locks available for free at several locations.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel listed those locations:

  • United Neighborhood Center of Milwaukee, 1609 W. North Ave.
  • City on a Hill, 2224 W. Kilbourn Ave., during outreach events on the second Saturday of each month.
  • Milwaukee Christian Center, 807 S. 14th St., at their food pantry, which operates Monday through Thursday, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Neighborhood House of Milwaukee, 2819 W. Richardson Pl.
  • Neu-Life Community Development, 2014 W. North Ave.
  • Silver Spring Neighborhood Center, 5460 N 64th St.
  • COA Youth and Family Centers, 909 E. Garfield Ave. and 2320 W. Burleigh St.
  • Northcott Neighborhood House, 2460 N. 6th St.
  • Journey House, 2110 W. Scott St.
  • All Milwaukee Fire Department stations and health centers run by the Milwaukee Health Department also hand out free gun locks.
