The study surveyed a total of 2,430 people across 42 states in September, OneVet said.
Respondents were asked to list the breed and current weight of their dogs. The company compared the results with the American Kennel Club's recommended weight chart for each dog's specific breed.

"From there, we were able to determine the average number of pounds that pets are overweight ... in each individual state," OneVet said, explaining its methodology. "Lastly, we compiled a list of the most overweight dog breeds overall."
Nearly 40 percent of American dogs gained weight since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Inside Edition reported.
"Always check with your vet if your pooch is experiencing rapid or unexplained weight gain, and make sure you’re feeding your furry friend the right amount of food while avoiding too many treats," OneVet said. Exercise, like taking dogs on walks, is a healthy addition to a pet's routine, the company added.
