MILWAUKEE, WI — Seven people were injured Wednesday afternoon in a shooting at a Milwaukee funeral home.

In a news conference, Milwaukee Police Chief Michael Brunson said the shooting happened around 12:45 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Home in the 4200 block of West Fond Du Lac Avenue.

The shooting is believed to be a drive-by. It happened as a funeral for a homicide victim was ongoing, Brunson said. The shooter has not been identified.

"This brazen act that was done in broad daylight is unacceptable in our city," Brunson said.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said in the conference that the city has seen an increase in gun violence this year after four consecutive years of decreasing rates of violence.

"Budgets are very stressed," Barrett said. "With COVID-19 the economic tsunami hat occurred afterward, and the pressure put on police department with social unrest, is making it more and more difficult."

The city, he said, is trying to maintain as much of the police force as possible, "but again the fiscal issues are very real."
