Report Says Aaron Rodgers Is Highest-Paid QB At $66.9 Million

Are the Packers paying Aaron Rodgers $66.9 million? A new study - while correct - is misleading. Here's why.

GREEN BAY, WI — A new study reports that Green Bay Packer quarterback Aaron Rodgers leads all NFL starting quarterbacks with a $66.9 million salary, and that he makes the equivalent value of a middle-class home for every minute he's on the football field.

"Aaron Rodgers has the highest yearly salary of any first-string quarterback. At $66,900,000 a year, Rodgers earns an hourly wage of $8,762,304," the study reported. "To break it down further, that shakes out to be $146,038 per minute of playtime. The first-string quarterback with the lowest-paid salary is Dak Prescott, who makes a mere $630,000 a year."

Yet, when you dig into the numbers, the"All Home Connections study, - while correct - is misleading. That's because Rodgers' most recent contract extension contained a $57.5 million signing bonus that skews the numbers. All Home Connections is an authorized AT&T retailer.

Rodgers signed a four-year, $136 million contract extension in Aug. 2018. At the time, Rodgers still had two years of a five-year, $110 million contract extension to work through. As part of the new four-year extension, the last two years of Rodgers' previous contract extension (2018 and 2019) were adjusted.

And part of that adjustment meant paying out $57.5 million in signing bonus money in 2018.

When you factor in all the cash, here's how it breaks down by year:

2018: $66.9 million
2019: $15 million
2020: $21.1 million
2021: $22 million
2022: $25.5 million
2023: $25.5 million

So, while the analysis is technically correct, it's based solely on the 2018 term, and not the total life of the contract. Multiple reports say A-Rod's contract actually averages about $33.5 Million over the life of his contract. That would put him in the top three, right behind San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and Washington quarterback Alex Smith.

Here's how the 2018 contract broke down:

Total: $66.9 million
Signing Bonus: $57.5 million
Roster Bonus: $7.8 million
Salary: $1.1 million
Workout: $500,000
