WI Warns: Be Aware Of Donation Scams, Find Real Charities

Wisconsinites should be wary of scammers pretending to be charitable services amid a high demand for donations across the state.

MILWAUKEE, WI — Wisconsin residents should protect themselves from scammers and confirm charities they donate to amid the demand for charitable services across the state, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection said Monday.

Scammers can use phony websites and high-pressure pitches to solicit money for fake charities and steal people's money and personal information, consumer protection administrator Lara Sutherlin said in a statement.

There are simple ways for Wisconsinites to protect themselves from scammers and ensure their donations reach their charity of choice, Sutherlin added.

The following are things to do if someone calls, texts or sends an email asking for a donation.

  • Don't make a payment over the phone. Hang up and do additional research first.
  • Don't click on links or attachments in emails, texts or social media posts. Don't share information with strange senders.
  • Don't donate cash through cash apps, by cryptocurrency or by wiring money to unknown people or organizations: These transactions are impossible to reverse.
  • Misspelled names may signify imposter organizations, so check the spelling of the charity's name on the account and website.
  • Ask who is making the request if you don't recognize the name or phone number.
  • Ask for the name, address and phone number of the organization asking for the donation.
  • Ask how your donation will be used and what percent of your donation will be used for program services or the organization's charitable purpose.
  • Ask the caller to send written material about their organization.
