Caller Impersonated New Berlin Police In Attempted Scam: Police

The real New Berlin Police Department on Wednesday alerted the community to a suspicious call one resident recently received.

NEW BERLIN, WI — A New Berlin woman recently received a phone call in which a person impersonating a New Berlin police officer falsely claimed there were payments due for non-existing warrants out for her arrest, according to The New Berlin Police Department

In the call, which had the same caller ID the real police department, someone had claimed they were "Officer John Alan from the New Berlin Police Department," the real New Berlin Police Department posted on Facebook. The caller ID was spoofed, according to the post.

The department said it is investigating the call, adding they do not call people and demand payment in any form. If you think you have a warrant out for your arrest, call the New Berlin Municipal Court at 262-780-8154, the agency said.

"Fortunately, the resident was suspicious of this solicitation and did not sustain a financial loss, nor did she provide the caller with any personal identifying information," the department posted to Facebook.

Some red flags that may have indicated the call was a scam included: the number given out for calling back was from Texas, the person knew they didn't have warrants out for an arrest, and the caller spoke with broken English, according to the New Berlin Police Department.
