New Berlin Cops Plan Polar Plunge At Milwaukee Zoo For Fundraiser

NEW BERLIN, WI — A group of cops from the New Berlin Police Department is planning on jumping into icy water at the Milwaukee County Zoo on Feb. 26 in support of Special Olympics Wisconsin.

So far, seven officers have joined the group that will jump into the zoo's pool, and the team is hoping to be the top fundraiser for the plunge at the zoo, according to Captain Mike Glider.

The event, which was formerly held in Muskego, has been going on for several years now. It's one of four events throughout the year that goes to support Special Olympics Wisconsin, Glider said.

"We're hoping for hoping for nicer weather on February 26th," Glider said. "A couple of years ago, it was snowing and about five degrees when we jumped."

"They had to put an agitator in the water to keep it from freezing and turning to a skating rink," Glider continued. "So that was very cold water. Probably about 32 and a half degrees. That was a fun day."

The group hasn't yet figured out what they're going to wear for the jump, but in the past, they've done plunges in a Teletubby costume and in uniform, Glider said.

So far, Glider has raised over $700 for his plunge. Other members of the team have altogether raised over $900 so far, according to the donation page.

The polar plunge will take place on Feb. 26 at the Milwaukee County Zoo, located at 10001 West Bluemound Road in Milwaukee.

The plunges start at 10 a.m. and admission is free, NBPD said via Facebook.
